Flowering - May - July.

Habitat - Low woods, moist ground on open slopes.

Origin - Native to U.S.

Other info. - This species is rare in Missouri and has only been reported from two southern Missouri counties. The subspecies carolina is reported from just one county (Carter) as is the other subspecies, angusta. The plant is more common in states to the southeast.
P. carolina and a handful of other species can be difficult to identify and most plant keys tend to fall short of properly separating the species with certainty. The shape and size of the calyx is not a good characteristic for identification.

Photographs taken off FR 3146, Carter County, MO., 5-26-03, and in the Tuskegee National Forest, AL., 6-8-05.
