Habitat - Moist depressions of upland prairies, low prairies, swamps, fens, streambanks, sinkhole ponds, lakes, sloughs, pastures, cultivated areas, old fields, ditches, disturbed sites, roadsides, railroads.

Origin - Native to U.S.

Other info. - This species can be found mainly in the southern half of Missouri. Three varieties occur in the state based on leaf sheath pubescence and spikelet shape. I won't go into the varieties here.
Grasses of this genus are easy to recognize but can sometimes be difficult to key to species.
