Habitat - Lake and pond margins, streambanks. Also in moist areas of glades, bluff ledges, prairies, and open woods. Roadsides, railroads.

Origin - Native to U.S. and much of the world.

Other info. - This common little species can be found throughout Missouri. The plant is easy to identify in the field because of its small size and squarrose spikelet scales.
C. squarrosus produces a sweet fragrance when bruised or crushed.
