Habitat - Fens, seeps along calcareous bluffs, glades, mudflats.

Origin - Native to U.S.

Other info. - This interesting little species can be found in the central Ozark region of the state and also in the northwest portion of the state.
In Missouri this species is broken into two varieties based on two different populations which exist in different habitats. Plants from the Ozarks, which grow in fens and seepy calcareous soils, are variety simplex (pictured above). These plants are perennial and have rhizomes. Plants from the northwest portion of the state are of the variety aristulata (Torr.) Kral. These plants are annual and lack rhizomes.
